To move to a new country, a new city and a new way of life is a challenge only those who’ve done it can truly understand. Social media may make it out to be a simple step, merely some flights to book and some goodbye dinners to attend, but the reality is far different. Tell people Los Angeles is your end destination and the challenge can be diminished even further - that’s the city where success is guaranteed, surely?
For Italian born artist and designer Mattia Biagi, moving to LA 21 years ago was a stark contrast to his hometown of Ravena, Italy. Have dinner with Biagi and you’ll hear the stories of a life well lived in Italy, one far from lacking in adventure and colour, but it is his time in the City of Angels that allowed him to truly make his mark.
Following time spent at leading fashion houses including Jean Paul Gaultier, Armani and Valentino, Mattia worked his way into the mentorship of Giulio Cappellini of the eponymous and world renowned furniture design firm. This was his gateway to Los Angeles, spreading his wings from the Cappellini universe and making waves with his own work - though true mentorship never ends. This varied background leads to varied work. Categorising Mattia’s work isn’t easy, from interior design to sculpture, furniture to painting and video installations and tar-dipped objects displayed and adored around the world. What is found in all Mattia’s work, however, are two key attributes: his art is personal, and his art is created to inspire feeling.
Mattia doesn’t keep a journal, his art is his journal. This willingness to pour himself into every creation, every colour choice, every texture and every facet of his work reflects only one side of the conversation he feels art and design should have.
To use your own story to invoke a feeling, a memory, a dream or any other emotion that is personal to someone else, uniquely theirs, is a rare skill. A proud champion of Italian art, design and creativity in Los Angeles and beyond, Mattia channels the light, the energy and people around him into every creation. Seeing, feeling and connecting with the city on two wheels only charges this inspiration - and ultimately leads to one of his most captivating pieces to date at Fuorisalone 2025, register here to watch the live unveil on Monday 7th April 2025.
